📍 Dwejra, Gozo, Malta
🗓️ Visited: June 23, 2024
Tucked behind the rugged limestone cliffs of Gozo’s west coast lies something unexpected: a quiet lagoon known as the Inland Sea. From above, it looks like a still pond embraced by stone. But look closely, and you’ll find a narrow tunnel cut into the rock—an opening to the vast, powerful Mediterranean.
This was supposed to be a peaceful boat ride through the cave into open sea. Instead, nature had its own plan.
When the Sea Decides
That day, the wind was strong, and waves crashed with force against the cliffs. Boats stayed docked. No tours. No crossing through the tunnel. But this “inconvenience” turned out to be a gift.
I climbed up the cliffs instead, following the rocks along the coastline—and what I saw from above took my breath away.

The water was wild and endless. Waves exploded against the sharp rock, sending up bursts of sea foam. I stood there, wind in my face, watching the drama unfold beneath me. At moments, it felt like the sea could rise up and take me with it.
Raw Beauty, Close and Unfiltered
Up here, the land is raw and ancient—no railings, no signs, just stone and salt. Pools formed in crevices. Sea spray cooled the sunburnt skin. There were no crowds, just a few silent figures walking slowly, absorbing the force of nature.

The contrast between the peaceful lagoon below and the roaring open sea beyond the tunnel was surreal. It felt like standing between two worlds—one still, one wild.
Hidden, But Not Forgotten
Gozo’s Inland Sea is often overshadowed by nearby attractions like the former Azure Window. But in moments like this, it becomes something more—a hidden gem not for what you do there, but for what you feel.
This wasn’t the boat ride I planned. It was better.
